How to Care for Your Glasses

You’ve spent your hard-earned money on new prescription glasses frames, so you’ll want to keep them in good condition, right? After all, they’re a long-term purchase. But incorrect or inadequate care can lead to damage to your lenses, such as scratches, which can stop them working properly. By following just a few simple steps, it’s easy to keep your eye glasses frames in tip-top condition:

  • Store your glasses in a hard case when you’re not wearing them to avoid them getting scratched or squashed.
  • Clean your glasses regularly to avoid a build-up of dirt.
  • When cleaning, use a special lens cleaning spray or a dab of water, then wipe gently in a circular motion with a soft, micro-fibre cloth. Keep in mind that wiping lenses on clothes or other materials can cause scratching.
  • Avoid touching your lenses directly with your fingers, which can lead to scratching, dirt build-up, and smudging.
  • Don’t let others try on your glasses, which can cause the frames to stretch or, if they’re not handled correctly, breakages.
  • Try not to make a habit of wearing your glasses on top of your head, which can cause them to become out of shape. If you don’t need them, simply take them off.
  • Use two hands to take your glasses on and off. Using just one can mean accidentally pulling at the arm of the frames and stretching or breaking them. Alternatively, hold your glasses by the nose arch.
  • When setting down your glasses, even momentarily, never place them lens down, which risks scratching the lens.
  • If your glasses do somehow get damaged, take them to an optician for fixing. Trying to mend them yourself can often make things worse.

  1. then instantly feeling like the exact opposite when you have to take them off and wipe them on your shirt to clean them.

  1. How unfunny the phrase ‘four-eyes’ actually is…but you get the last laugh because specs are ultra-cool now.

  1. Having a good old cry whilst wearing your glasses and then never being able to see again because you can’t get those splotches off the lenses.

  1. Getting eye make-up smudges all over the lenses.

  1. Quietly resenting people trying on your glasses but being too polite to say know.

  1. Seeing your favourite celebrity in their glasses and feeling really cool and simultaneously annoyed with yourself that you didn’t buy the same style.

  1. Your glasses sliding down your nose making you look like a strict librarian.

  1. Being barely able to see in the shower.

  1. The blind terror you feel when you open the oven door and your specs steam up so that you can’t actually see what it is you’re touching.

  1. Being unable to watch a movie lying down because you’ll squish your frames.

  1. The impact rain has on your ability to see anything around you.

  1. Experiencing double the terror on theme park rollercoasters because you have to remove your glasses and can’t see anything.

  1. Fogging up when you put your hot coffee anywhere near your face.

  1. Having to somehow negotiate wearing 3D glasses as well as your normal specs when you go to the movies.

  1. Making your dirty/wet glasses worse by wiping them on your woollen sweater or scarf. It gets you every time.

  1. How uncomfortable it is to exercise and sweat with specs on.

  1. Grease splatters on your lenses from cooking that delicious fry-up.

  1. People constantly asking why you don’t just wear contacts and not understanding that you actually love your glasses.
